Veteran Unemployment Hits a Record Low –
Figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the annual veteran unemployment rate for 2015 was 4.6%, the lowest on record. The rate for veterans that have served on active duty since September 2001 , a group referred to as Gulf War-era II veterans, declined by 1.4% to a total of 5.8% in 2015. Family of Veteran Sues VA and Suicide Hotline –
The family of an Army Veteran, Tom Young, has filed a wrongful death claim against the Veterans Administration and the Suicide Hotline claiming that his call was mishandled, leading to his suicide. The 30 year old Iraqi War veteran’s call was routed to voicemail when he was reaching out for help. The VA has laid blame on the contractors who forwarded the call and states that similar calls are no longer forwarded.
Uber Accomplishes Service Member Hiring Pledge –
The ride-sharing company, Uber, launched the UberMILITARY program in hopes of signing up at least 50,000 service members, whether active duty, spouses, or veterans, within 18 months. The company has announced it has met the milestone, and hopes to meet the goal of delivering $500 million in earnings to drivers with military backgrounds by 2020.
General Motors Expands Military Discounts –
From April 6, 2016 to May 31, 2016, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC will expand their military discount programs for all veterans and their spouses, regardless of separation date, in honor of National Military Appreciation Month. The discount includes many popular models, including the Chevrolet Malibu, GMC Sierra, and Buick Encore.
